Activities

For the adventurous, you can dive the local reefs, mountain bike or hike the nearby trails, rent a kayak or and discover the delightful, private coves and beaches of the beautiful Flat Top islands that surround the bay. You can take your friends for a morning of world-class salmon fishing and an afternoon of golf on Gabriola’s challenging course overlooking Hoggan Lake followed by a relaxing beverage with the “locals” at one of the many island pubs. As a winter getaway, you can cross-country ski the nearby trails or relax in front of the fireplace with a book and a warm beverage.

A quieter day might include a walk around the shores of beautiful Drumbeg Provincial Park, exploring the ancient Petroglyphs or a visit to the many white sand beaches to take in the incredible marine life far out in the ocean and close up in the many tidal pools.

Gabriola is also known as the “Isle of the Arts” because of the dozens of painters, potters, woodcarvers, jewellers and other artists spreads all around the island. No visit to Gabriola would be complete without a tour of one or more of their studios or at least a visit to Artworks where many pieces by the artisans are available for sale. Gabriola is famous for its Thanksgiving Studio Tour where all island artisans open their doors and showcase their works one weekend every year and its renown Poetry Gabriola Festival that attracts appreciative audience members and literary performers from all over the globe.

The island is proud to boast its own Gabriola Museum showcasing the history of island and its peoples as well as the local flora and fauna. For kids of all ages, there is the Paradise Island Alpaca farm that is open to the public for tours and a farm shop featuring Alpaca wool products. Or how about learning to ride a horse with a view of the ocean? Nearby Maples Estate & Farm offers lessons to beginners and seasoned riders of all ages.

During the summer, there is a Saturday Farmers Market at the Aggi Hall which is an enjoyable place where one can pick up some local produce or an artistic conversation piece or just some conversation and there is the Friday afternoon Summer Studio Tours where local artists open their studios to the public.

Throughout the year, there is always a local event happening on the island whether it be a theatrical or musical production that one can take in.

And with the many fine Gabriola restaurants and pubs available, there is ample opportunity to sample the island foods, relax with a beverage and perhaps enjoy some local entertainment.

We will be pleased to help you plan your vacation activities when you arrive. Also, please check the links page for more island information.
